i was creating the gui for project 1 and decided to use radio buttons to allow the user to select between english and metric measurements. i didnt recall having to use them last semester so if anyone wants to use them for anything in the future here is a site that provides all the information you need, especially information about button groups.

I'm having issues with RSS as well.

I found a site that lists some java project ideas for new developers. If you get extremely bored or want to test your skills, these projects seem to be viable and actually have useful purpose when completed.

3 Major Middle Eastern Internet and Telecommunications Lines "Cut"

"The Falcon cable, owned by a firm which operates another damaged cable, led to a 'critical' telecom breakdown, according to one local official"

3 seperate and geographically distant internet and telecom cables "CUT"? Who would want to "cut" communications cables to the Middle East... ?

At least Google.com.sa is still up!

"No ships were present when two marine cables carrying much of the Middle East's internet traffic were severed, Egypt's Ministry of Communications has said, contrary to earlier speculation about the causes of the cut.

The ministry had originally stated that a ship dropping its anchor on the two key cables was most likely responsible for Wednesday's cut in service that robbed Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India of most of their internet connections.

"A marine transport committee investigated the traffic of ships in the area, 12 hours before and after the malfunction, where the cables are located to figure out the possibility of being cut by a passing vessel and found out there were no passing ships at that time," said the statement. "

I'm sure most of you have heard that Microsoft is trying to buy into Yahoo!. This has caused Yahoo!'s stock to increase a good deal. I think it will be interesting to see how Google responds no matter what the outcome of this attempted merge is. Will Google try to buy some control of Yahoo! if Microsoft's offer is rejected? What will happen to all three of the companies' stock in either outcome? For more info, check out these sites:

After spending over an hour and two semesters on the RSS feed. I can't get that b@#$%^&* to work. I give up. Prof. Garrett, you NEED better instructions on how to set it up. Yes, I'm slow and need a step by step instruction. Also, don't we get points for general collaboration for having the feed setup and signing up for the forum????????

I gave points for setting up a feed and registering for the forum last semester, but didn't this semester because you should already have known how to do it. If you are still having problems with the feed, can you be more specific as to what's not working? Are you getting errors trying to upload the feed, create the feed, or what?

Here are two documents you should read when setting up your feed (there are links to these on my web page):

    http://eiu.ngarrett.org/ngarrett/eiu/Documents/FeedForAll%20User%20Manual.pdf

    http://eiu.ngarrett.org/ngarrett/eiu/Documents/Configuring%20FeedForAll%20for%20uploading.pdf

The second document has screen shots of the newest version of FeedForAll and tells you what should be in the blanks. Also, pay attention to the first document. If you have never served web pages from your pen account, you will need to set up a directory there called http before you can upload your feed from FeedForAll.

"I gave points for setting up a feed and registering for the forum last semester, but didn't this semester because you should already have known how to do it."

I understand the reasoning behind this, however you specifically said that you would be giving 5 points for each of these at the beginning of this semester, and I believe some people were counting on this as part of their first collaborative grade.

I'm certainly not looking to slight anyone their points. I will go back and give 5 points for each of those provided the student signed up during the first 4 weeks (for the forum) and emailed me their feed url during the first 4 weeks. I don't recall saying that, but certainly might have. One thing I know I didn't say, however, was that I would give any points for that after the first check, since I have never done that in the past. Therefore, I'll go back and look at anyone who did not receive 25 on their collaborative score, but did sign up for the forum or email me their feed url as of the date of the first check.

I was looking through the code examples in the book and decided it would be handy to have the files and instead of going and checking out the cd, I just found the files online - I put a copy on pen server for anyone that wants them:

What would happen if I open a file and didn't close it? I know we're using only one file for project 4 but I'm thinking in terms of large scale. Could this possibly crash a server? Just a random thought.

Hum, i know not closing a file can be bad, but im not sure how bad... I would guess for an input file it wouldn't be that bad because your not locking the file and might just have some wasted memory space with a pointer of some sort of saying where you are in the file. But on the other side I know not closing a output file can be bad... the file might not get a end of file marker, or even become corrupt. The file could also be locked so nothing else can access the file.

In my mind this question is more complex then just a programming one, because it might also depend on the file system in use on the system, the type of drive the file is one (a open locked file on a cd-rom might mean you can't take the disk out) and the operating system.

I think its a really good question and would like an answer too, but i have a feeling the answer could become very complex because of alot of different reasons.

Thanks for posting the link for the cd files, that made it much more convenient than checking out the cd itself.
On another note, for those of you who are looking to learn or brush up on your java applet skills for the web, I found this really good book at Waldenbooks while looking for some java material, its called Head First JavaScript and it contains a lot of visual material in it, which helps me out a lot because I am definitely a visual learner. I plan to pick it up when I get the extra cash to help me prepare for my summer internship. If you're interested, check out the site:
    http://www.headfirstlabs.com/books/hfjs/
If anyone has any good Java learning books or reference books that you think might help someone prepare for J2EE and Applet programming, post please! I'm in the market for some good material.
  3.
Okay, I was corrected on my previous post by Chris about the difference between JavaScript and Java Applets:

"... javascript is not, nor will it ever be a java applet.... Applets are compiled code, in fact they are 99% the same as a normal java program. In fact javascript is not really related to java besides the fact they both now come from Sun...
javascript was made by netscape and is only named javascript because of a deal with sun and netscape"

    sorry for the mixup
but I'm still looking for good learning material for programming in Java, good reference material as well as something that I can read that explains Java concepts and classes in simple, easy to understand terms in a way that my brain will remember, rather than just cramming for tests and a random program here or there. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Google wants to make wifi available nearly everywhere with soon to be opened up airwaves in the 'white space' which exists between TV channels.

Google claims radio frequencies as a natural resource. "Our nation typically uses only about five percent of one of our most precious resources," writes Richard S. Whitt, Google's Washington Telecom and Media Counsel in the letter to the FCC, released Monday. "Unlike other natural resources, there is no benefit to allowing this spectrum to lie fallow. The airwaves can provide huge economic and social gains if used more efficiently, as seen today with the relatively tiny slices utilized by mobile phones and WiFi services."
